This anthology analyses the status of women functioning at an imperial court in Europe at the beginning of the age of absolutism. It concludes that the imperial court was on the one hand a space which allowed women to excel in various fields but on the other hand by its very way of operating isolated and excluded them from the world. Some articles describe and analyze cases in which the highly regulated access to this space became permeable. Accordingly, women entered fields which were not in their traditional space.The fields which are explored by these articles range from cultural activities such as music, ballet, theatre, the opening of galleries to agricultural entrepreneurship, and they include reflections on the status of women in these fields
