The unusual composition of the polyhalides makes them interesting from the point of view of valence theory. In chapter 1 a survey is given of the properties of these compounds, their classification, the rules for their stability, their applications and the structures, known from previous X-ray work. In order to extend the experimental basis for a theory of the chemical bonds in the polyhalides, the structures of CsI4 and N(C2H5)4I7 were determined by X-ray diffraction and the bond lengths in N(CH3)4I5, already investigated by Hach and Rundle (1951), were established more precisely. ....
