In a previous Study we have shown that the oligosaccharide inulin can prevent aggregation of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) coated plasmid DNA/cationic liposome complexes ('' PEGylated lipoplexes '') during freeze thawing and freeze drying [Hinrichs et al., 2005. J. Control. Release 103, 465]. By contrast, dextran clearly failed as stabilizer. These results were ascribed to the fact that inulin and PEG are compatible while dextran and PEG are not.
