Passive Q-switching of 3-mu m lasers with the help of a Fe2+ : ZnSe single crystal is demonstrated. The 6-mJ, 50-ns giant pulses are obtained from a 2.9364-mu m Er : YAG laser by using this passive Q switch.</p
