Video-assisted Thoracic Surgery

Some operations performed traditionally by conventional means that can now be done with VATS include: biopsy for the diagnosis of pulmonary, pleural or mediastinal pathology, decortication for empyema, pleurodesis for recurrent pleural effusions or spontaneous pneumothorax, surgical stapler for lung mass resection, resection mediastinal mass or pleural, thoracic sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis, diaphragmatic hernia surgery, resection of the esophagus or esophageal mass or diverticulum resection, lobectomy / mediastinal lymphadenectomy for lung cancer, trauma including lung, chest wall, and diaphragm, lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) for pulmonary emphysema.
