The effects of cadmium metal on the bioaccumulation and histopathology of macrobrachium rosenbergii post larvae

Heavy metals are the most serious pollutants of great environmental concern because they are degradable and toxic. Cadmium is an essential trace nutrient for humans and animals. The deficiency of Cd leads to increase the physiological demand in aquaculture. The effect of cadmium metal on the bioaccumulation and histopathology of freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii post larvae were studied. The samples of M. rosenbergii post larvae were taken from Pusat Penternakan Udang Galah (PPUG), Perak. Post larvae were exposed to different concentrations of cadmium which are 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 ppb. After 96 hours exposure, the samples were used to investigate the histopathology test and bioaccumulation of cadmium in M. rosenbergii post larvae. The concentration of cadmium cannot be determined in this studied. This was due to technical error. The heavy metal was analysed by using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). However, the standard curve of condition 2 in different wavelength using viewing mode of axial and nebulizer flow of 0.7 L/min was the best condition among the other standard curve. M. rosenbergii manifested histopathological alterations in gills and muscles when exposed to 80 ppb concentration of cadmium meanwhile in control sample there was no abnormalities noted
