Les Italiens de Tunisie: la construction de l'italianité dans un contexte colonial français (1896-1918)

The Tunisian colonial society was characterised by a strong presence of Italian nationals who for a long time were the largest group of foreigners in the Protectorate, outnumbering, at least until the thirties of the 20th century, the French population. Even though the period between the end of the 19th century and the First World War has been understudied in the research on the Italians of Tunisia, in those years there was a strong immigration in the Regency and, at the same time, a reconfiguration of Italian colonial ambitions in Africa. The first part of the thesis explains the diachronic pathways of Mediterranean mobility which allowed the settling in the Beylicat of groups recognised as Italian nationals, after the political unification of Italy. In 1896, Conventions regulate the Franco-Italian diplomatic tension that had begun after the French occupation of Tunisia. This diplomatic agreement guarantees to Italian nationals the maintenance of national citizenship for children born in Tunisia, as well as the preservation of the associative and school network previously established. The second part analyses the structure and the social dynamics of associations and schools, which aim to build a sense of national belonging. The purpose of this associative network, managed by the upper-class and supported by the consular institutions, is to make the group of Italian citizens of Tunisia an Italian community within the Tunisian colonial society. Finally, the third part examines how the Tunisian production of extraterritorial Italianness overlaps both with Italian colonial ambitions and with processes of racialisation within the community. The Italo-Turkish war and the First World War are analysed as a vector of the nation-building in this community. The support of the Italians of Tunisia for the conquest and colonisation of Libya, and their military, social and economic engagement in the Great War, show us the project of a particular form of colonial Italianness formed within the French Protectorate of Tunisia.La société coloniale tunisienne a été caractérisée par une forte présence de ressortissants italiens qui pour longtemps ont été le plus nombreux groupe d’étrangers du Protectorat dépassant, au moins jusqu’aux années trente du 20e siècle, la population française. Si la période entre la fin du 19e siècle et la Première Guerre mondiale a été déconsidérée dans les études sur les Italiens de Tunisie, pendant ces années il y a eu une forte immigration dans la Régence et, en même temps, une reconfiguration des ambitions coloniales italiennes en Afrique. La première partie de la thèse traite des parcours diachroniques de mobilité méditerranéenne qui ont permis l’installation dans le Beylicat de groupes reconnus comme ressortissants italiens à la suite de l’unification politique de l’Italie. Les Conventions de 1896 règlent la tension franco-italienne qui avait commencée à la suite de l’occupation française de la Tunisie et, de surcroît, garantissent aux ressortissants italiens le maintien de la nationalité aux enfants nés dans le Protectorat, ainsi que la conservation du réseau associatif et scolaire précédemment établi. La seconde partie s’attache à analyser la structure des associations et des écoles, et leurs dynamiques sociales, qui visent la construction d’un sentiment d’appartenance nationale auprès des ressortissants. Le but de ce réseau associatif, géré par les notables et soutenu par les institutions consulaires, est de faire de la collectivité de ressortissants d’Italie une communauté italienne à l’intérieur de la société coloniale tunisienne. Enfin, la troisième partie étudie comment la production tunisienne d’une italianité extraterritoriale s’imbrique à la fois avec les ambitions coloniales et avec des processus de racialisation internes à la collectivité. Le conflit italo-turc pour la Libye et la Première Guerre mondiale sont analysés au prisme de leur fonction de vecteur de la fabrique du national au sein de la collectivité italienne. Le soutien des Italiens de Tunisie pour la conquête et la colonisation de la Libye, et leur engagement militaire, social et économique dans la Grande Guerre, dévoilent le projet d’une particulière forme d’italianité coloniale formée au sein du Protectorat français de Tunisie
