MAX phases are transition metal carbides or nitrides, with a characteristic layered microstructure. These original materials combine properties typical of ceramics, such as a high rigidity and a refractoriness, with particularities found usually in metals, alike a good thermal and electrical conductivity as well as the possibility to be easily machined. Some phases, containing aluminium, show oxidation resistance, with the formation of a dense and adherent layer of Al2O3 on their surface. These properties give them high potential for applications in demanding environments, particularly in the transport sector.
