Understanding a taxon’s pollination biology and floral characteristics can help shed light on that group’s evolution. The genus Burmeistera (Campanulaceae: Lobelioideae) is a young but diverse genus that is almost exclusively bat-pollinated. This group’s radiation has likely been caused, in part, by changes to floral characteristics that have evolved to reduce competition for successful pollinators. In this study I examined the pollination biology of B. parviflora in the cloud forests of Monteverde, Costa Rica because this species is an apparent exception to this genus’ bat-pollinated trend.
