In recent years the ecotourism industry has been touted as offering incentives for protecting biodiversity while promoting economic growth for the surrounding communities. This paper examines the impact that ecotourism has on bird communities in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve. Abundance and species richness for birds were compared on tourist trails and trails closed to tourist. The results indicated no significant difference in H’ values between trail types. The average species richness between trail types was not significantly different, but tourist trails significantly increased in average abundance. Increases may be a result of food resources provided by the Preserve on tourist trails or to a decrease in predation on such trail...
