Herbivore-induced defenses in plants save energy in the absence of herbivory (Karban et al. 1997). Despite this, Passiflora biflora has not been shown to have short-term induced defenses in past studies (Baptiste 2002). P. biflora might have a slower reaction to chronic herbivory either through greater leaf toughness or greater cyanide concentrations. To test this, leaves from three sites were assessed for herbivory defense.
