Passifloraceae and Heliconiine butterflies have coevolved around a cyanide defense against herbivory. This study focuses on the oviposition preference of Heliconius charithonia and Heliconius hecale on Passiflora biflora and Passiflora vitifolia. Changes in cyanide content and leaf toughness were studied as a function of leaf age of P. vitifolia and P. biflora in the Ranario Butterfly Garden in Monteverde, Costa Rica. In addition, P. biflora plants were compared with vines outside of the garden. For P. vitifolia, leaf toughness significantly increased with age while cyanide content significantly decreased. P. biflora sampled inside and outside did not show a significant relationship between leaf age and either cyanide or toughness. Cyanide ...
