The use of living organisms to assess water quality is a century old approach (Cairns and Pratt 1993). Widespread use of this method of evaluation has been common in North America and Europe (Metcalf 1989), yet it has not been applied in the Tropics. Here I present a test and alternatives to Hilsenhoff’s (1977, 1982, 1987) methodology for assigning Family Biotic Index values (a measure of pollution tolerance) to macroinvertebrates in a tropical premontane moist/wet forest (Holdridge 1967). Samples of benthic macroinvertebrates were taken from seven streams in the Monteverde, Costa Rica area.
