Effects of herbivory have been seen to vary according to the particular growth form of a plant and its habitat. The idea that these factors can interact to determine the nature of gap succession has been suggested but has not yet been thoroughly explored. Leaves of pioneer, understory, and canopy plants were collected and analyzed to quantify herbivory levels on each growth form. Herbivory was found to be higher in gaps (p = 0.0015), and this was true to varying degrees with respect to growth forms and single families. Results suggest that herbivory is not the main factor influencing instantaneous or eventual gap composition, but it could interact with other effects like competition for light and water.
