This article analyses combatant novels with a melodramatic component. The relevance of such an analysis is caused by the presence of a significant number of veteran artists' texts in contemporary Ukrainian literature and at the same time by the current absence of ґrunner studies of the indicated layer of works. The main features of melodrama as a genre of mass literature were identified, and by means of comparative analysis the dual and distinctive qualities of the novel by a writer with combat experience and a non-combatant were shown
