The article takes up problems connected with the fashionable sub-discipline of sociology – visual sociology, slowly gaining an independent status in the theoretical and methodological field. Four models of visual sociology and their characteristics are described. The problems are also shown that are connected with the notions used in the discipline. Also basic definitions, as well as the sociological, semiotic and interpretative research techniques of the visual material (photography and film) are discussed
