In the paper an approach is presented, which helps a decision-maker to take a proper decision when searching for a best construction of a line-start permanent magnet synchronous machine (LSPMSM). A motor construction with the U-shape internal magnets in the rotor has been investigated. Calculation results concerning two ideal compromise solutions of a bi-criterial optimization problem are presented. An analytical model has been applied in the synthesis program, and FEM calculations were used to validate this model. Both constructions have been verified employing the simulation technique in Matlab environment, to examine their self-starting property
