This paper deals with the new concept of the highly efficient hydroelectric generating sets dedicated to application in small hydropower stations. The main features of a new hydroelectric generating set solution are a variable speed operation of water turbine according to actual hydrological conditions in the hydropower station and no need for gearbox between turbine and generator. The operating conditions of generating sets which are currently used in small hydroelectric power plants are analyzed. The benefits resulting from the use of modern high efficiency generating sets with permanent magnet generators in small hydropower stations are discussed.
