The paper presents a reactive power compensation for small hydropower plants with an induction (asynchronous) generator. Conventional compensation, related to capacitor bank application, is discussed. Instead capacitors, a three level power electronic converter connected in parallel to the induction generator can be used to provide reactive power compensation. A control of the power converter bases on voltage oriented method. In the paper, the control structure has been shown and described. Moreover, the simulation and laboratory results has been presented. The laboratory tests has been done on 7.5kW induction generator.
