Andreas Vesalius was born on 31 December 1514 in Brussels, Habsburg Netherlands, in what is today Belgium. His family was established in medicine for several generations, and young Andreas showed an early interest in anatomy. He attended the University of Louvain and then studied medicine at the University of Paris. Vesalius enrolled at the University of Padua, Europe's prominent medical school, receiving his doctor of medicine degree in 1537. On the day of his graduation he was immediately offered the chair of Surgery and Anatomy in Padua. He also guest lectured in Bologna and Pisa.
