Slopewash and linear erosion in Śnieżnik Kłodzki Massif – East Sudety Mts

The paper presents the results of a 10-year long series of monitoring of slopewash and linear erosion processes, carried out in the Snieżnik Massif (East Sudety) in all phytoclimatological belts. Accumulation and erosion processes were measured using surface wash traps, Gerlach troughs and measuring pins. Slopewash on forested and sod-covered mountain slopes is negligible and does not exceed 1 Mg·km⁻²·a⁻¹. It was only marginally higher during extreme rains in July 1997, which subsequently generated a gigantic flood in the whole region. It appears that forest and grass cover effectively protect slope surfaces against wash processes. Gully erosion is influenced by anthropogenic factors and has increased in the period of ecological calamity (since 1970) and associated tree felling. The amount and rates of erosion depend on precipitation totals and intensities, length of initial erosional incisions, and physical state of the soil. In terms of material removed from the slope, it is up to hundreds of times more effective than slopewash. Slopewash and linear erosion are components of slope denudational subsystem. In the recent years the frequency of occurrence of extreme meteorological events has increased. Threshold values are far exceeded and resultant geomorphic processes may lead to catastrophic consequences. Under such circumstances, linkages between slope and valley floor denudational subsystems are created and massive denudation affecting entire catchments may occur.W pracy przedstawiono wyniki dziesięciu lat monitoringu procesów spłukiwania i erozji wodnej prowadzonych na stokach Śnieżnika Kłodzkiego (Sudety Wschodnie) we wszystkich piętrach fitoklimatycznych. Stosowano chwytacze zmywu powierzchniowego, rynny Gerlacha oraz metody szpilkowe. Spłukiwanie na zalesionych lub zadarnionych górskich stokach jest znikome i wynosi poniżej 1 Mg·km⁻²·a⁻¹. Podczas gigantycznej powodzi w lipcu 1997 roku spłukiwanie zwiększyło się nieznacznie. Las i warstwa darni skutecznie chronią stok przed spłukiwaniem. Erozja żłobinowa jest uwarunkowana antropogenicznie, nasiliła się w okresie klęski ekologicznej i wyrębu lasów. Wielkość erozji zależy m.in. od sumy i intensywności opadu deszczu, długości inicjalnych rozcięć erozyjnych, stanu fizycznego gruntu, i jest kilkaset razy większa od spłukiwania. Spłukiwanie i erozja liniowa wchodzą w skład stokowego podsystemu denudacyjnego. W ostatnich latach zwiększa się częstotliwość ekstremalnych zdarzeń klimatycznych, w następstwie których procesy geomorfologiczne przekraczają wartości progowe, osiągając ekstremalne lub katastrofalne natężenie. Dochodzi wtedy do okresowego połączenia denudacyjnego podsystemu stokowego z podsystemem dolinowym i intensywnej denudacji całej zlewni
