Der Aufsatz rückt das Problem der Konstitution der kognitiven Erfahrung in den Vordergrund. Es werden zwei Lösungen dieses Problems analysiert, die von Cassirer und McDowell vorgeschlagen wurden. Beide Autoren gehen von Kants Erfahrungstheorie aus und entwickeln selbständige Interpretationen dieser je nach ihrer Schulzugehörigkeit. Obwohl McDowell seine Argumentation auf der Basis der analytischen Philosophie entfaltet, zeigt sie eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit mit der von Cassirer. Auf die Aufzeigung der Gemeinsamkeiten und der Unterschiede der Denkstrategien, die den Rahmen der jeweiligen Traditionen überschreiten, ist der Aussatz gerichtet.
