The Control of Interpretation and the Interpellation of Subjectivity. On the Possible Uses of Critical Discourse Analysis in Textbook Research

The first aim of this paper is to present opportunities arising from the use of critical paradigm (particularly Critical Discourse Analysis, CDA) in textbook research. The second aim is to present an example of research that uses the method and theory of Norman Fairclough’s CDA to analyze junior high school Social Science textbooks. The main notions used in the research are interpretation control and Fairclough’s interpellation of subjects in discourse. The results show that the discourse and linguistic mechanisms utilized in the researched material are used to legitimize and justify the representations of social reality constructed in the textbooks and to reduce the potential for ambivalent interpretations of the knowledge presented. The CDA perspective allows for a discovery of the means by which the aforementioned effects are produced. Drugim celem jest przedstawienie przykładu badań wykorzystujących metodę i teorię CDA Normana Fairclougha do analizy podręczników do wiedzy o społeczeństwie w gimnazjum. Główne pojęcia stosowane w badaniu to kontrola interpretacji i interpelacja Fairclougha w dyskursie. Wyniki pokazują, że dyskurs i mechanizmy językowe wykorzystywane w badanym materiale są wykorzystywane do legitymizacji i uzasadniania przedstawionych w podręcznikach reprezentacji rzeczywistości społecznej oraz do zmniejszenia możliwości ambiwalentnej interpretacji przedstawionej wiedzy. Perspektywa CDA pozwala na odkrycie środków, za pomocą których wytwarzane są wyżej wymienione efekty.
