Family and Procreation in the Monotheistic Religions. Doctrinal Assumptions and Empirical Reality

The article presents the doctrinal requirements of monotheistic religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam) connected with procreation, the creation of families and their functioning. These religions do not allow abortion, however Islam and Judaism allow it in special cases, while Catholicism accepts the possibility of the life-saving-treatment of mother, even if the side effect is death of a child. In vitro fertilization is not accepted only in Catholicism. This confession accepts only natural methods of family planning, and in other confessions of Christianity and in other religions is permitted to use a variety of contraceptives. The results of various studies that describe the actual implementation by the followers of the various religions doctrinal assumptions were also discussed. They found that the higher the level of religiosity is presented by respondents, the more they observe the requirements set by their own religions. They more often created families interested in having children, more cared about the quality of families and relationships between parents and children. The lower level of religiosity was marked by respondents of all religions, the more often they departed from the norms and principles related to creating the families.W artykule przedstawiono wymogi doktrynalne religii monoteistycznych (chrześcijaństwo, judaizm, islam) związane z prokreacją, tworzeniem rodzin i ich funkcjonowaniem. Religie te zasadniczo nie zezwalają na aborcję, jednakże islam i judaizm dopuszcza taką możliwość w szczególnych przypadkach, zaś w katolicyzmie uznaje się, że w przypadku zagrożenia życia matki możliwe jest dokonanie zabiegu ratującego życie matki, nawet jeśli skutkiem ubocznym jest śmierć dziecka. Zapłodnienie pozaustrojowe nie jest akceptowane jedynie w katolicyzmie. Także jedynie katolicyzm akceptuje naturalne metody planowania rodziny. Natomiast w pozostałych wyznaniach i religiach dopuszczalne jest zapłodnienie pozaustrojowe oraz dopuszcza się stosowanie różnych środków antykoncepcyjnych. Omówiono też wyniki różnych badań opisujących faktyczną realizację przez wyznawców założeń doktrynalnych poszczególnych religii. Okazało się, że im wyższy poziom religijności prezentowali respondenci, tym bardziej przestrzegali wymagań stawianych im przez własne religie. Częściej tworzyli rodziny zainteresowane posiadaniem dzieci, w większym stopniu dbali o jakość rodzin i o relacje między rodzicami a dziećmi. Im niższy poziom religijności cechował respondentów wszystkich religii, tym częściej odstępowali od norm i zasad związanych z budowaniem rodzin
