Catholic social teaching as a discipline of knowledge in theological studies Catholic social teaching is one of the disciplines of knowledge taught in the semina-ries and other theological universities. Te so-called “social issue” became the subject of the Churchs moral teaching only at the end of the 19th century with the frst encyclical of Pope Leo XIII, Rerum novarum, published in 1891. Te study of the Churchs social teachings leads to an understanding of its nature, purpose and essential elements of this scientifc discipline. Te justifcation for the need to study the Churchs social teachings in the seminaries and in Catholic theological faculties can be found, among others, in the encyclical of Pope John XIII, Mater et magistra. Te curriculum and teaching content of Catholic social teaching are closely embedded in the Church’s expectations for the for-mation of alumni in seminaries as those called to the priesthood in the Church. Catholic social teaching, as a discipline of knowledge, is frst of all of a theological nature. Today, the literature on Catholic social teaching is quite extensive. Te interdisciplinary nature of social teaching reveals the particular links between this discipline of knowledge and sociology. Te development of Catholic social science as a discipline of theological know-ledge had a signifcant impact on social and political transformations in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, including Poland, which until recently belonged to the block of communist countries. Te lecturing staf at the Major Seminary in Janów Podlaski and Siedlce was comprised of priests with high qualifcations, both scientifc and educational, who enjoyed great authority among the alumni.Katolicka nauka społeczna jest jedną z dyscyplin wiedzy wykładanej w wyższych seminariach duchownych oraz innych uczelniach teologicznych. Tak zwana „kwestia społeczna” stała się przedmiotem nauczania moralnego Kościoła dopiero pod koniec XIX wieku, wraz z pierwszą encykliką Leona XIII Rerum novarum, wydaną w 1891 roku. Studium społecznej nauki Kościoła prowadzi do poznania jej natury, celu oraz istotnych elementami tej dyscypliny naukowej. Uzasadnienie konieczności studium nauki społecznej Kościoła w seminariach duchownych i na katolickich fakultetach teologicznych znajdujemy między innymi w encyklice Jana XIII Mater et magistra. Program nauczania i treści wykładowe katolickiej nauki społecznej są ściśle wpisane w oczekiwania Kościoła dotyczące formacji alumnów w seminariach duchownych, jako powołanych do kapłaństwa w Kościele. Katolicka nauka społeczna, jako dyscyplina wiedzy posiada przede wszystkim charakter teologiczny. Literatura z zakresu katolickiej nauki społecznej jest dziś dość obszerna. Interdyscyplinarny charakter nauczania społecznego ujawnia szczególne związki tej dyscypliny wiedzy z socjologią. Rozwój katolickiej nauki społecznej jako dyscypliny wiedzy teologicznej miał niemały wpływ na przemiany społeczne i polityczne w krajach Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej, w tym także Polski, należących do niedawna do bloku państw komunistycznych. Kadrę wykładowców w Wyższym Seminarium Duchownym w Janowie Podlaskim i w Siedlcach, stanowili księża o dużych kwalifkacjach zarówno naukowych jak i wychowawczych, cieszący się wielkim autorytetem
