The article summarises the data on the use of civil law contracts (CLCs) as employment contracts, as well as the findings of other research on the segmentation of the Polish labour market and attempts to conceptualise the role, dynamics and distribution of the illegal use of CLCs. Polish labour market belongs to the most segmented in the OECD countries. The rise of CLCs is alarming since they are particularly unfavourable for the employees. The incidence of CLCs concluded with a violation of labour law, i.e. in a situation in which Labour Code contract should be formally concluded, has increased rapidly after the economic crisis.
