The paper discusses possibilities of using modem nuclear power technologies in power stations. Forecasts for nuclear power development until 2050 have been presented. Shares of individual reactor types in total power installed in operational nuclear power plants have been given. It is forecasted that the first Polish nuclear power plant will utilize one of three reactor types: pressurized water reactors (PWR), boiling water reactors (BWR) or heavy water CANDU reactors. Results of comparative analyses on electricity generation costs in nuclear and thermal power plants (running on hard coal, lignite or natural gas) have been presented
