An unicum struck at Maeonia for Marcus Aurelius is of twofold interest regarding the local coinage under the Antonine dynasty. On the one hand its obverse was countermarked with a Victory that provides information on how long Antonine coins had been circulating in that city. On the other hand the reverse which features Demeter in a biga drawn by winged snakes can be considered as the first evidence of such a theme at Maeonia, where it forms a diptych together with the rape of Kore. These figures can be explained by local cults but also by Sardis’ influence and more widely by the mythological legacy of Lydia : the rape of Demeter’s daughter was located by one tradition near Nysa, on the other side of mount Tmolos, and the local issues of Aur...
