In ancient Egypt writing appears closely linked to the art of the spoken word. Its designations and characteristics of power were founded on holy writ. Indeed, hieroglyphics is the writing of the divineword : sš n mdw nṯr. A language cannot be conceived as if it were neither spoken nor heard. Likewise the written word, deferring in time the silent representation of language, cannot be heard as if it were not read.
