Irrigation's impact on the mesopotamian evolutionary process. In several areas of the world (Mesopotamia, Egypt, Indus, China, Central America, Peru), at different periods, simple societies of farmers progressively developed, and their growth finally resulted in the emergence of pristine states. As all of these evolutionary centres used to practice irrigation, it has long been wondered whether a relation existed between that particular kind of agriculture and the structural transformation of societies.
