The study presents the results of 3-year field experiments aimed at assessing the effect of nitrogen dose balanced on the basis of Nmin content, depending on the distribution in the soil profile and recognizing the effect of the type of nitrogen fertilizer on the formation of maize grain yield components. Nitrogen applied in the form of mineral fertilizer was characterized by greater efficiency in comparison to Nmin contained in the soil, as evidenced by a significantly higher grain number in the ear and 1000 grain weight. It was shown that mineral nitrogen (Nmin) present in soil in maize rooting zone significantly influenced the number of production ears per area unit.
