The priest and his bear children or the passage to civilization of the children of a priest and a she-bear This article sets out to interpret two Cuzco Quechua versions of the pan-Andean tale known as “Juan Oso” or ‘The Bear’s Son”. The analysis of the story’s symbolism sheds light on the profound logic on which it is based: human and civilized society cannot survive without establishing interchange and cooperation with wild beings from the other world.
