The christianization of Chinese in Peru: integration, submission and resistance Abstract For the chínese coolies who arrived to Peru between 1849-1874, and afterwards for the merchants that followed them, the adoption of Catholicism was one of the most important elements of their integration strategy to the national society. Two religious orders fought to be in charge of this community. Starting in 1870, the Jesuits took the initiative in training Chinese clergy and they were followed by the Franciscans whose efforts began at the end of the 19th century and continue to the present day. Similarly, these same people participated in the official creation of the Beneficencia China in 1885, and the members of the clergy were present in almost all of the Chinese movements and institutions. It is the Spanish priests that up to the present time accompany, orient, and advise Chinese catholics, who each day are more numerous and powerful in the contemporary Peruvian community. The influence of the Spanish clergy has been so important that we can ask ourselves whether the Chinese community of Peru would have been so well organized without their intervention.La christianisation des Chinois au Pérou : intégration, soumission et résistance Résumé Pour les coolies chinois arrivés au Pérou entre 1849 et 1874, puis pour les commerçants qui les suivirent, l'adoption du catholicisme fut un des éléments majeurs de leur stratégie d'intégration dans la société nationale. Deux ordres évangélisateurs se disputèrent la charge de cette communauté, celui des Jésuites, à partir de 1870, qui eut l'initiative de former des religieux chinois puis, celui des Franciscains, de la fin du siècle jusqu'à présent. On retrouve ces religieux dans presque toutes les manifestations et institutions chinoises ; c'est ainsi qu'ils participèrent, en 1885, à la création officielle de la Beneficencia China. Les religieux espagnols n'ont depuis jamais cessé d'accompagner, d'orienter et de conseiller les chinois catholiques, toujours plus nombreux et puissants au sein de la communauté. Leur influence a été si importante qu'on peut d'ailleurs se demander si sans eux la communauté serait en ce jour si bien organisée.Resumen Para los chinos coolies llegados al Perú entre 1849 y 1874 y luego para los comerciantes que les siguieron, la adopción del catolicismo fue uno de los mayores elementos de su estrategia de integración en la sociedad nacional. Dos órdenes religiosas compitieron para encargarse de esta comunidad. Es así que, a partir de 1870, fueron los padres jesuitas los primeros que tomaron la iniciativa de ordenar chinos, seguidos, a fines de siglo, por los franciscanos. Igualmente, es así que desde la creación oficial de la Beneficencia China en 1885, los miembros del clero se encuentran presentes en casi todas las manifestaciones e instituciones chinas. Son los padres españoles los que más, hasta ahora, acompañaron, orientaron y aconsejaron a los chinos católicos, cada día más numerosos y poderosos en la comunidad actual. Su influencia ha sido tan importante que podemos preguntarnos: sin ellos, ¿la comunidad china del Perú estaría hoy en día tan bien organizada?Lausent-Herrera Isabelle.
