Clonal integration in a tropical palm Abstract Reinhardtia gracilis is an understorey clonal palm in the tropical rain forest of Veracruz, México. In order to investigate the degree of physiological integration of ramets in this species, an experiment combining defoliation, physical separation of ramets, and soil fertilization was conducted. Plants' responses on leaf production, leaf abscission and leaf net change were registered during two years since the beginning of the experiment. Defoliation, severing of ramet connections and soil fertilization increased leaf net gain of ramets in intact palms. The most severe treatment was found in undefoliated unfertilized severed palms.
