Bioplastics as a new environmentally friendly materials

Problemy zanieczyszczenia środowiska naturalnego odpadami z tworzyw polimerowych, wyczerpujące się zasoby surowców kopalnych, nowe regulacje prawne dotyczące m.in. odzysku odpadów tworzywowych, a także protesty ekologów ukierunkowane na wprowadzanie na rynek materiałów ekologicznych były głównymi powodami, dla których w wielu placówkach naukowo-badawczych podjęto prace badawcze w zakresie inżynierii materiałowej, recyklingu oraz technologii wytwarzania nowych materiałów użytkowych, przyjaznych dla środowiska naturalnego, a jednocześnie zachowujących właściwości klasycznych polimerów. W artykule omówiono wybrane zagadnienia w zakresie biotworzyw, tj. tworzyw biodegradowalnych i/lub wytwarzanych z surowców odnawialnych. Przedstawiono trzy główne grupy biotworzyw obejmujące tworzywa: (a) wytwarzane z surowców petrochemicznych i ulegające biodegradacji, (b) nieulegające biodegradacji oraz wytwarzane z surowców odnawialnych oraz (c) wytwarzane z surowców odnawialnych i ulegające biodegradacji. Scharakteryzowano właściwości wybranych tworzyw biodegradowalnych, a także procesy biodegradacji oraz kompostowania. Ze względu na niektóre wady tych tworzyw lub możliwość ich częściowej degradacji już na etapie przetwórstwa omówiono również wybrane metody modyfikowania ich niektórych właściwości.Rapidly growing annual production of polymers which attained 288 Mt in 2012 causes the enhancement of range of their applications as well as problems with management of their wastes arising. The environment becomes more and more burdened by non-biodegradable plastics and also processing raw materials for producing plastics. The problems of environmental protection, new legal regulations, protests of ecologists are main reasons to take the new initiatives in material engineering, manufacturing new functional renewable and biodegradable materials for packaging purposes as well as their recycling technologies not affecting their basic properties. From the environmental point of view the greatest meaning have, so called, bio-plastics i.e. manufactured from renewable and/or biodegradable raw materials. In spite of still poor application compared to other plastics (only 1% of the total polymer production) they begin to be more and more competitive compared to classic polymers of petroleum origin. They may be divided into three main groups: (a) biodegradable plastics made of petrochemical raw materials, e.g. polycaprolactone (PCL), aliphatic – aromatic co-polyesters (AAC), (b) plastics manufactured from renewable raw materials, non biodegradable, often provided with the prefix “Eco” or “Bio” like e.g. polyethylene (Eco-PE), polypropylene (Eco-PP), poly(ethylene terephtalate) (Eco-PET), and (c) plastics manufactured from renewable and biodegradable raw materials like polylactide (PLA). At present the most advanced research tasks are conducted in renewable plastics. The problem concerns biodegradables (often called “double green”) like PLA as well as non-biodegradable plastics like Eco-PE. The greatest expectations concern application of “double green” because of their total bio-decomposition, renewability, and their ease in processability using classic processing machines. In spite of many valuable features some bio-plastics need to be modified regarding certain disadvantageous properties concerning their usefulness. To do it following modification, i.e. physical as well as chemical may be undertaken, e.g. by blending with other polymers, preparing composites with different fillers or copolymerization, grafting or cross-linking. Biopolymers in primary or modified form may be applied not only in medicine for tissue rebuild engineering but also in mass application because of their easier and easier availability and ever decreasing prices
