With about 400 km long and a basin covering 10000 km2, the Charente river is one of the most important flench coastal rives, its human occupation begins quite early as acheuleans already inhabited this region. Two facts must be pointed out at this time : 1) it’s essentially the Charente related valley that were frequented (limestone landscapes presenting a large number of caves and rock shelters) and 2) the last marine transgression deposits found over the earlier sediments on a distance of about 40 km from the actual seaside.
