French wheat market intégration during the 18th and 19th centuries. French historians have traditionnaly relied on the fail in transportation costs to account for the increasing degree of market integration in the wheat sector throughout the nineteenth century. More specifically, it is argued that the decline in transportation costs has implied a reduction in regional price dispersion. This paper shows that price convergence took place before any significant improvements in the road, canals and railways networks were observed. As such, other factors such as a facilitated access to wheat market information, the influence of the international wheat trade as well as the introduction of a future' market need also to be taken into account.
