Following an epistemological study of the reference knowledge which aim to identify the obstacles faced during the building of chemical element concept, the behaviour of lower sixth form students who were confronted to a number of situations in which these obstacles were open to be found was studied. For these students, the properties of a substance can change without its identity changing (perceptive obstacle), a molecule is a homogeneous particle which has the same properties as the substance (mechanical obstacle), description of the microscopic level are deduced from macroscopic observations (realistic obstacle).
