Interpretation of the similitudes and differences in the conceptual mastering of electromagnetism based on the students’ relation to knowledge In this paper we use the concept of relation to knowledge to explain the differences in the conceptual mastering of electromagnetism by students in third year at university. Using a questionnaire, we have shown that the majority of students have difficulties giving a physical sense to basic electromagnetic concepts in simple situations and that they use the associated mathematical tools in a procedural way rather than in a reasoned way.
