Writing strategies adopted by pupils in a secondary school education which relies on written work for the learning of science.This paper reports on a teaching programme that aims to diversify and enrich the ways in which the written work of pupils will help them to learn scientific concepts. This study aims to identify the strategies used by a group of 15 year-old science pupils when they attempt to explain to younger pupils, using a written text, a few key concepts of biotechnology. This study also aims to identify the extent to which these strategies and understandings correspond to the current theories of how writing enhances school learning.
