Teaching about fossils at primary school Programmes in the third cycle of elementary school (covering children aged nine to eleven years) prepare the ground for the study of fossils as traces of the history of life on earth. Reponses collected as a result of questioning students at this level about the nature, age and formation of fossils reveals the presence of representations which often constitute an obstacle to the comprehension of the principles of palaeontology. A consideration of the history of geology reveals some similarities between the children’s representations and certain explanatory theories concerning fossils.
