The transformation of substances, an important issue in the teaching of chemical changes How far does chemistry teaching succeed in reorganising and enriching the conceptual world of pupils ? Our first research project deals with building the concept of chemical changes all the way up classes of the French secondary school. It shows that the building and functioning of this concept depend on the prior building of the scientific concept of substance. Our second project concerns the conditions favourable for a first construction of the concept of substance, at an experimental level, and its effect in extending the thought categories of the pupils.
