Helping pupils to create a tool for use in explanatory scientific writing Alain Robert Camille Durnerin Science classes, like others, require the pupils to write, but this they do not do well. How can we help them ? First of all by observing them : a study which relates the mode of writing and the caracteristics of the texts produced, analysed with regard to their degree of success in the school context, enables us to understand the different types of incompetence shown by the pupils, and the possible reasons for them. Then by setting them to a metacognitive task : the results of our inquiry can help the teachers to make pupils clearer about their writing processes and to create a guide for writing scientific explanation.
