Archaeological digs at Fontdouce’s abbey and La Gripperie-Saint-Symphorien (Charente-Maritime, France) revealed numerous archaeomalacological remains : over 530.000 fragments in about 40 kg have been studied. They come from medieval and modern contexts. These remains correspond mainly to food leftovers, discovered in closed (pits) or open (embankments, floor levels) contexts. The malacofaunal assemblages are strongly dominated by flat oyster (Ostrea edulis), accompanied by the common mussel (Mytilus edulis), clams (Ruditapes decussatus and Polititapes aureus) and cockles (Cerastoderma sp.).
