Origin and Functions of the Augustales (12 BC – 37 AD). New Hypothesis – This article focuses on the innovation of the augustalitas, which appears around 12 BC. The corpus on which this study is based supports recent assumptions on the augustales and leads us to propose new reflections on their primary functions and their origin. Far from being priests of the “ imperial cult” or “ quasi-magistrates” lacking a real function, the augustales appear rather as being responsible for the ludi augustales, which were created in Rome and quickly spread throughout Italy and the Empire.
