Paysage et distinction sociale. Les mutations de l’environnement châtelain au XIXe siècle : l’exemple de la Haute-Vienne

Agriculture, landscape and class distinction. XIXth century changes in the manorial environment : the case of Haute-Vienne. The 19th century was marked by a deep change in the way in which the rural upper classes looked at the countryside. This change can be observed through the evolution of the descriptive language of the time as well as in the new developments taking place around the manors and the large landed properties. The early 19th century was characterized both by the permanence of physiocratic ideals and by the will to recreate an urban setting in the countryside. At the time, the environment was only perceived through the distorting prism of literary or historical references. However, a renewed interest in nature was felt very early on, but it was an interest in a nature which would be remapped and socially significant, in which sparse plantations, aesthetically significant changes and specific uses of space all signalled the appartenance of the owner to the ruling class. Thus the landscape became one of the elements in a strategy of class distinction on the part of the country elite.Le XIXe siècle est marqué par une profonde mutation du regard porté par les élites rurales sur le paysage des campagnes. Cette mutation s’observe à la fois dans l’évolution des discours descriptifs et dans les nouveaux aménagements réalisés autour des châteaux et dans les grandes propriétés foncières. Les débuts du XIXe siècle sont marqués par la permanence des conceptions physiocratiques et par la volonté de recréer à la campagne un cadre de vie de type urbain. Le paysage est alors perçu à travers le prisme déformant des références littéraires ou historiques. Toutefois, on observe très rapidement un intérêt nouveau pour la nature, mais une nature réaménagée, socialement signifiante, où la rareté des végétaux, la qualité esthétique des aménagements, la spécificité des usages signalent l’appartenance à une élite. Le paysage devient ainsi un des éléments de la stratégie de distinction des notables ruraux.Grandcoing Philippe. Paysage et distinction sociale.
