Cattle in the bocage at the end of the Modem Era cannot be considered as a side activity. The study of several farming accounts shows that at that time, cattle accounted for 20 to 40 % of the income in a sharecropping unit. Halfway between a Breton model where cows were small and numerous, a Norman model turned massively towards fattening and a Poitou model where oxen were all yoked to the plough, Mayenne, with its dual emphasis on cattle-breeding and cattle-rearing, provided the markets of Normandy and the Paris basin with large numbers of animals in the process of being fattened.
