Paleoecology of Silurian Bryozoa from Gotland (Sweden)

The Upper Wenlockian sedimentary rocks of Gotland, locally known as the Halla-Mulde Beds, are deposited in a shallow sea. The sedimentary rock types include well developed reefs of "barrier" and "fringing" reef types and marly limestones in both forereefal and backreefal positions. The sedimentary rocks are rich in Bryozoa as well as in other shelly fossils. Twentyseven bryozoan species have been identified from this stratigraphical sequence of Gotland. The bryozoans tend to occur in certain associations which may be fossil equivalents to the neontological animal communities. Twelve different faunistic associations can be identified in the investigated material when whole the fauna is considered. When Bryozoa alone are treated, five major zones are discernable. The bryozoan associations appear to be counterparts to the brachiopod associations found in the studied material.Les terrains sédimentaires du Wenlockien supérieur de Gotland, connus localement sous le nom de "Halla-Mulde Beds", se sont déposés dans une mer peu profonde. Les séries sédimentaires types contiennent des récifs bien développés de types récifs-barrières et récifs-frangeants et des calcaires marneux placés en position antérieure et postérieure du récif. Les roches sédimentaires sont riches aussi bien en bryozoaires qu'en autres fossiles coquilliers. Vingt-sept espèces de bryozoaires ont été identifiées dans cette séquence stratigraphique du Gotland. Les Bryozoaires tendent à se présenter en certaines associations qui peuvent être les équivalents fossiles de communautés d'animaux néontologiques. Quand la totalité de la faune est considérée, douze associations fauniques différentes peuvent être identifiées. En traitant les bryozoaires seuls, cinq associations majeures sont discernables. Il semble que les associations de bryozoaires soient les équivalentes des associations de Brachiopodes trouvées dans le matériel étudié.Brood Krister.
