The history of the Chinese in Peru, which can be traced from the second half of the XIX century to present day, remains mostly unknown. The classic image of the Chinese as peones of big haciendas and the famous chinos de la esquina or restaurant owners (chifas), has always placed them in cities and on the coast. This static image proves to be misleading. The present article shows that Chinese stood out immediately because of their great geographical mobility and assimilation capacity. The Chinese, far from being passive spectators, have contributed since 1870 to the organisation of the national territory especially in the amazonian area — the last place in which one would expect to find them.
