In Europe, lese-majesty and blasphemy merged through two main mechanisms : its content (violation of the sacred – the king being the representative of God on Earth), its procedure (the implementation of a justice of exception – lèse-majesté being considered as one of the most heinous crimes). In Thailand, recent assimilations of lèse-majesté to blasphemy challenge the assumption that the relationship between blasphemy and lèsemajesté is peculiar to European history.
